Boats & the upgrade ceiling
Boats are comfort until you chase sea events. Spend on rods first — then buy the one boat that unlocks everything else.
The one rule that matters
You can upgrade a boat only up to the highest base tier you own. Buying the Luxury Speedboat (1M, Tier 5) gives you a Tier-5 boat and unlocks Tier-5 upgrades for every other boat — so buy the higher tier first, then upgrade your favourite if you like its shape.
Upgrades happen at the TEMP UPGRADER by the Crescent Isle fountain. The shop's A and B classes are currently identical.

Balanced (recommended)
SurfBoard → Dingy → focus on rods → Luxury Speedboat → upgrade a favourite
Ultra-frugal
SurfBoard → Luxury Speedboat. Slow for a long time; all money goes to rods.
Comfort
SurfBoard → Dingy → Lil Yacht → Luxury. Faster travel sooner, Tier 5 later.
Best solo / Leviathan boat
An upgraded SurfBoard: tiny footprint, clear view, bobber stays close.
Worst stats-per-coin
Manta — identical to the Luxury Speedboat for four times the price.
Biggest party
The Galleon: 11 seats, 8M + materials, only Tier 3. A luxury, not a speed upgrade.
Controls: boost is Shift on PC or right stick forward in VR; drift is the left trigger in VR.
